The International Db2 Users Group (IDUG) 2019 North American conference will take place this June and many of the lectures on the agenda focus on automation. Phil Grainger of BMC Software writes in the abstract of his lecture titled, Surviving or Thriving – Automation May Be the Key to Your Future Success,

“We are all facing new challenges that were not even part of our worst nightmares even a few years ago. It’s becoming clear that managing modern database resources is not possible using the manual process we are used to using. For a business to thrive in this new era we need to look to automation to take some of the drudgery off the shoulders of DBAs.”

And in Fred Sobotka, of FRS Consulting’s, abstract for his lecture titled Automation Everywhere: A DB2 LUW Scripting Roundup he writes, “Automation is not merely about laziness, but is, in fact, an absolute necessity to staying sane as a DBA.”

Much of the conference is centred around how to help make a DBA’s job easier, and for good reason. With the move towards cloud-based platforms and the digitalization of everything, organizations are dealing with seemingly infinite amounts of data to store, transfer, secure, and draw insight from.

Oracle recently released a whitepaper titled, “The Rise of the Renaissance Database Administrator” that argues DBAs are taking on the new responsibility as a business decision maker due to their ability to understand how to gain insight from this onslaught of data to manage in the digital age.

Db2 maintenance tasks used to be one of the most tedious parts of a DBA’s job. But thanks to recent automation technology, the DBA is becoming more available to move into the strategic roles that organizations demand.

Insoft Infotel’s data optimization software product, iDBA-Online, leverages artificial intelligence to automate maintenance tasks such as Reorgs, Backups, Loads, and Unloads for IBM Db2. The software replaces the DBA’s need to manually manage tasks as it intuitively performs them only when deemed viable after executing an automatic cost-benefit analysis compared to organizational SLAs.Insoft Infotel will be performing live demos of iDBA-Online at IDUG and other Db2 user conferences across North America and Europe throughout the year and learning from experts in the industry about what is really needed to make the busy DBA’s job easier. Visit us at IDUG in booth #1 if you are at the show. If you are not attending IDUG, you can find out more about iDBA-Online at our product page here, or reach out directly at software@insoft-infotel.com.
